About Cobalt Sales Group

The Best Manufacturer Shouldn’t Lose to the Best Marketer.

That’s not a tagline. It’s something I believed for twenty-three years on a factory floor, and it’s the reason Cobalt exists.

A Manufacturer Who Learned Marketing

I’m not a marketer who learned manufacturing.

I’m a manufacturer who learned marketing.

I studied sales and marketing in college, then spent years in the field selling desktop computers, mainframes, and telecom equipment in the early days of those industries.

In 1992, I started my own company.

PB Exchange was a remanufacturing operation. We purchased large telephone systems from Fortune 500 companies, rebuilt them, and resold them to other Fortune 500 companies. Walgreens. Ashland Oil. Clients that expected precision, reliability, and accountability.

I ran PB Exchange for 23 years. Twenty employees. Real inventory. Real manufacturing. Real customers who didn’t forgive mistakes.

I know what it takes to build something and make it work.

I’m not a marketer who learned manufacturing. I’m a manufacturer who learned marketing.

The Best Companies Were the Hardest to Find

After PB Exchange, I started consulting for manufacturers, helping companies run by engineers and technical people build out sales and marketing.

During that time, I noticed something that never sat right with me.

Some of the best companies in their industries were nearly invisible online.

They had superior products. Superior engineering. Superior expertise. They solved problems their competitors couldn’t solve.

Yet when a buyer went looking online, those companies were nowhere.

Meanwhile, companies with weaker products but better marketing were getting the calls, the quotes, and the contracts. Not because they were better. Because they were easier to find.

Buyers Changed How They Buy. Most Manufacturers Haven’t Caught Up.

For decades, manufacturers could rely on trade shows, referrals, distributors, and relationships to generate opportunities. Those channels still work. Referrals in particular still work.

But something changed underneath them.

Engineers started researching online before calling anyone. Procurement teams started comparing options before requesting quotes. Decision-makers started educating themselves before speaking with a salesperson.

And now buyers are asking AI systems to help them identify suppliers, evaluate options, and answer technical questions.

Even a referral goes through that step. Somebody gives your name, and the buyer looks you up before they act on it.

The companies that are visible during that research get considered. The companies that aren’t get passed over, often without ever knowing a buyer was looking.

Somebody gives your name, and the buyer looks you up before they act on it.

Why I Built Cobalt

When I got into the marketing business, I saw the same pattern I’d seen in manufacturing.

Agencies talked about tactics. SEO. Websites. Social media. Lead generation. Content.

Those things matter. But they weren’t addressing the real problem.

The real problem was that manufacturers couldn’t be found while buyers were doing their research. The expertise was there. Nobody could see it.

So I asked a different question.

Not “How do we improve your SEO?”

But “How do we make the expertise you already have the expertise buyers find?”

That question became Cobalt.

What Cobalt Does

Cobalt helps manufacturers dominate Google and AI search.

We find the exact questions your buyers are asking, build content that answers them with your expertise, publish it on your site, and measure what happens in Google rankings and AI citations. That work is delivered through the Authority Growth Program™, a fully managed program structured as a one-to-two-year engagement.

We are not an SEO agency, a content shop, or a website company. Those are tactics. We’re after the result those tactics are supposed to produce: when a buyer in your market goes looking, they find you, they understand you, and they trust you before they ever pick up the phone.

You can read how the work is done on Our Approach, and what a full engagement looks like on the Authority Growth Program™ page.

Who Does the Work

Cobalt works only in the industrial world: manufacturers, OEMs, and the technical companies that serve them.

That choice shapes who’s on the team. The people writing about your process include engineers with graduate degrees in mechanical engineering and materials science. We speak the language, and we can read your drawings.

It also shapes how the work gets done. Your experts spend their time reviewing, not writing. About an hour a month is what we ask of them.

Why Manufacturers Work With Us

Most agencies can work with anyone. We don’t.

Manufacturing is different. The buying process is different. The buyers are different. The sales cycles are different. The content is different.

We’ve spent years working in and around manufacturing companies. We know the language, we understand the audience, and we understand what it takes to earn the trust of an industrial buyer.

That’s not something you learn in a marketing textbook.

What We Believe

  • We believe the best manufacturer shouldn’t lose to the best marketer.

Many manufacturers create extraordinary value. They build better products, employ talented people, and solve difficult problems. Yet too often they remain invisible while less capable competitors dominate the search results. We believe expertise should win.

  • We believe expertise is the most valuable asset a company has.

Most manufacturers already have the knowledge buyers need. The challenge isn’t expertise. The challenge is visibility. We help manufacturers make expertise visible.

  • We believe visibility creates opportunity.

If buyers can’t find you, they can’t evaluate you. If they can’t evaluate you, they can’t trust you. If they can’t trust you, they won’t choose you. Visibility is not vanity. Visibility is a growth strategy.

  • We believe authority compounds.

An ad stops when the budget stops. A trade show ends when you pack up. Content published on your own site keeps working long after it’s published, and each new piece makes the ones before it stronger. It needs upkeep, like any machine on the floor. But it’s yours, and it compounds.

  • We believe trust matters more than traffic.

Traffic alone doesn’t create growth. Trust does. The goal isn’t to attract visitors. The goal is to become the trusted source in your market.

  • We believe buyers have changed, and AI is accelerating it.

Engineers research online. Procurement compares suppliers online. Decision-makers educate themselves before contacting sales. AI is now part of that journey. Manufacturers who build authority today will be better positioned for what comes next.

  • We believe visibility should be measurable.

Most manufacturers don’t know how visible they are. What gets measured gets improved. Visibility should be treated like any other business asset: tracked, reported, and managed.

Manufacturers don’t need more marketing. They need to be easier to find, easier to trust, and easier to choose.

That’s why we created Cobalt.
