Investment

# Visibility Is an Investment. Authority Is an Asset.

Most marketing programs are expenses. You pay for them. They run. They stop.

Visibility is different.

The Investment

## What Cobalt Engagements Cost

Most Cobalt engagements are structured at $3,500 per month.

That is a sustained monthly investment — not a one-time project, and not a retainer that runs on autopilot. Every month includes active research, production, and publishing.

Engagements are scoped to your market, your goals, and the competitive landscape you operate in. For companies with more product lines to cover, broader markets to own, or faster timelines, we discuss what that requires during the audit.

We don’t work with everyone. We work with manufacturers and industrial companies who treat visibility as a strategic priority rather than a line item to minimize.

> The investment is straightforward. The compounding return is not.

Investment Versus Expense

## Why This Is an Investment and the Rest Are Expenses

When you build authority in Google and AI search, the content you publish today keeps working for you next month, next year, and the year after that. Rankings compound. AI citations compound. Trust compounds. The expertise your company has spent decades building finally starts working as hard as you do.

That is what Cobalt clients invest in.

The difference isn’t a figure of speech. It’s the difference between buying something and buying time.

When you buy a trade show, you buy an event that happens and is then over. When you buy ads, you buy impressions consumed the moment they’re delivered. When you pay a rep, you buy their month. In none of those cases is anything left afterward that belongs to you.

When you publish on your own domain and fix the structure underneath it, something remains, and you hold title to it. That is the actual distinction between an expense and an asset, and it is the argument this whole page rests on.

What you still own after twelve months Same spend. Two very different mornings on month thirteen.ADS · TRADE SHOWS · OUTREACH · A REPNothing. The money bought activity while it wasbeing spent. When it stopped, the activitystopped with it. An asset that is never maintained loses value; that is true of a machine too.

Two things follow from owning it.

The first is that it keeps producing without proportional further spend. A page that ranks brings buyers next month at no additional cost. Paid acquisition never works that way — more volume costs more money, every single time.

The second is that it compounds, and not in a hand-waving way. Search engines judge how thoroughly a site covers a subject, so every new article makes the existing ones more credible. The twentieth piece helps the third one rank. Internal links accumulate. Pages that have been up longer have had longer to earn references. And once AI systems are drawing on you as a source, being cited makes further citation more likely.

None of which means it runs itself. Rankings erode. Competitors publish. Content nobody refreshes loses ground. Think of it the way you already think about a machine on your floor — unambiguously an asset, and it still needs maintenance, and its value still depends on demand for what it makes. Nobody concludes from that that machines are a bad purchase.

There is one more property worth naming. When you sell the business, this goes with it. A decade of trade show spend does not.

What This Work Costs

## There Are Three Tiers in This Market. It Helps to Know Which One You’re Looking At.

Roughly $500 to $1,500 a month.

Content mills, keyword services, and freelance SEO. Ten to fifteen hours a month of largely automated or offshore work. No industry knowledge, no research into what your buyers actually ask, no architecture. This is the tier described above, and it is where most manufacturers formed their opinion of what search marketing is.

Roughly $3,000 to $7,000 a month.

Real research into what buyers in your category are searching for, a content architecture built around it, and in-depth content produced by people who can hold a technical conversation. Someone who knows your industry is accountable for the outcome. Cobalt sits here, at $3,500.

Roughly $10,000 to $30,000 a month.

Full-service B2B marketing agencies. Everything in the tier above, plus paid media management, marketing automation, sales enablement, video production, website builds, and a dedicated account team. Industrial B2B specialists commonly publish rates in this range, and the larger programs run well past it.

Your own quotes may differ.

Cobalt does the large majority of what the top tier does for building authority in search and AI — the research, the architecture, the content, the publishing — without the paid media, the automation stack, or the account team overhead. That is the whole reason the number is what it is.

What Moves the Number

## What Drives the Cost Up, and What Drives It Down.

Costs go up when:

Your category is crowded and well-covered, so earning a first-page position takes more depth than a competitor with a head start needed.

You sell several distinct product lines that buyers research separately — each one needs its own architecture, not a paragraph on a shared page.

Your expertise lives entirely in people’s heads, so it has to be drawn out through interviews before anything can be written.

You want to move faster than the compounding curve naturally allows.

Costs go down when:

Your niche is genuinely narrow, where a small number of well-built pillars can cover most of what buyers ask.

You already have technical documentation, specification sheets, application notes, or past presentations that can be mined for real substance.

Someone on your team can give an hour a month to answer questions — the single biggest accelerator we see.

You’re early in your category, before a competitor has established the authority position you want.

Why Most Manufacturers Have Been Disappointed

## “We Tried SEO Once. It Didn’t Work.”

We hear this constantly. And it’s almost always true — it didn’t work.

What we ask next is what they actually bought. The answer is usually some version of the same thing: $500 to $1,500 a month, to a firm that promised rankings.

Here is what that budget buys, because it can’t buy anything else:

- Articles written offshore by writers who have never seen a machine shop, at thirty dollars apiece.
- AI-generated content published at volume, unedited, with nobody who understands your industry checking whether it’s right.
- The same keyword repeated through thin pages that answer no real question.
- Directory submissions and backlink packages bought in bulk.
- A monthly report full of activity — posts published, keywords tracked, impressions up — that never connects to a single buyer.

None of that builds authority, because none of it demonstrates expertise. Google has spent twenty years getting better at telling the difference, and AI systems are being trained on the same signal. Content that doesn’t know anything doesn’t get cited.

So the manufacturer concludes that search doesn’t work for their industry. What actually happened is that they bought the cheapest version of something that has no cheap version.

The Real Cost of Invisibility

## The Question Is Not What Visibility Costs. It’s What Invisibility Costs.

Every month a manufacturer is invisible in search, opportunities are lost quietly — with no record of what never arrived.

There are no line items for missed RFQs. No invoices for the deals that went to a more visible competitor. No report showing what buyers found instead of you.

But the cost is real. 84% of B2B buyers end up buying from the first vendor they contact. Most make that first contact before you know they were looking. If your company isn’t visible during that research phase — in Google, in AI search, in the questions your market is asking right now — the opportunity is gone before you had a chance to compete.

Source: [6sense (opens in a new tab)](https://6sense.com/newsroom/84-of-b2b-deals-are-decided-before-marketers-even-know-about-them/)

The investment in visibility shows up on a budget. The cost of invisibility never does.

> The cost of invisibility may exceed the cost of action.

What’s Included

## A Complete System. Built and Run for You.

Most Cobalt engagements operate as a fully managed program. You bring the expertise. We make it visible.

### Research and planning

We identify the exact questions your buyers are asking in Google and AI search, and map a content architecture designed to position your company as the authority.

### Content creation

We research, write, and refine educational content that demonstrates your expertise and earns trust with buyers, search engines, and AI systems.

### Full publishing

We handle the complete publication process, including formatting, images, and data graphics. Content goes live on your website, properly structured.

### Website improvements

We identify and implement structural changes to your site that increase trust signals for Google and AI systems. Small changes that make a measurable difference.

### LinkedIn distribution

We repurpose and publish your content on LinkedIn, extending its reach to buyers and decision-makers active in your market.

No deliverable lists. No activity reports. One goal: make your company more visible to buyers, search engines, and AI, month after month.

How This Compares

## You’re Not Deciding Whether to Spend Money to Grow. You’re Deciding Where.

Referrals eventually run out. Every other way a manufacturer finds new customers costs money — and most of what it buys disappears the moment you stop paying.

The figures below are estimates, offered so you have something to compare against. Your own numbers may be different, and you know your costs better than we do.

Trade shows

Roughly $3,500 to $5,000 a month

Annualized across two or three shows including booth, travel, materials, and staff time.

When the floor clears, the pipeline clears with it. Nothing remains.

Estimate

Cold outreach

Roughly $4,500 to $7,000 a month

For lists, tools, and someone to run the sequences.

Stop the sequences and the meetings stop that week. Nothing remains.

Estimate

Paid advertising

Roughly $5,000 to $10,000 a month

Including management.

Traffic for exactly as long as you fund it. Turn it off and it’s gone overnight. Nothing remains.

Estimate

An outside sales rep

Roughly $11,900 to $13,500 a month

Fully loaded, before travel, a vehicle, or expenses. This one is not an estimate. The Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the mean annual wage for technical and scientific sales representatives at $113,520, and its Employer Costs for Employee Compensation data shows wages account for 69.9% of what an employer actually pays.

Relationships are real value — but they leave when the rep does.

Authority in search and AI

$3,500 a month

Rankings earned in month six are still working in month thirty-six. Citations built in year one keep appearing in year three. The content library stays, and it keeps compounding.

Every option on this list can be the right call depending on what you need. Only one of them leaves you owning something afterward.

Who This Is For

## Cobalt Works Best for Manufacturers Ready to Grow.

This works well for companies that:

- ✓Have genuine technical expertise their market values, and aren’t yet visible to the buyers who need them.
- ✓Understand this is a twelve to twenty-four month investment, not a ninety-day campaign.
- ✓Are willing to let their own expertise be the foundation of the content, rather than outsourcing it wholesale.
- ✓Want a partner who already understands manufacturing, rather than an agency that needs to be educated on it.

If that describes your company, the audit is the right next step.

## The First Step Is Understanding Where You Stand.

Before we discuss any engagement, we start with a Buyer Visibility Audit™. It’s where every Cobalt relationship begins.

We evaluate your visibility the way your buyers, Google, and AI systems see it. You’ll get a scored picture of where you stand, the single biggest gap we found, and what we’d do about it.

No pitch. No pressure. An honest read on your current position and what’s possible.
